Tips to Help Your Child Read

If your child struggles to read then it can impact the type of academic opportunities they are eligible for. For help improving your child’s reading level, The Tutoring Center, Sandestin has some tips to share.

Read Your Junk Mail

When email came around, we all thought that it would be the end to a mailbox filled with promotional flyers and bank notices. However, this definitely didn’t happen, as your mailbox can attest. Instead of discarding these items, ask your children to read each one aloud while you prepare dinner or unwind for the evening. While it may not seem like traditionally educational reading material, the word choices and writing styles your child will encounter may not only help them to learn new words and improve their reading fluency, but it can also help them to become better writers.

Ingredients

While your children are with you in the kitchen reading your junk mail, have them help you prepare the meal and, each time that you use a pre-prepared ingredient, ask them to read you the ingredients list. When your child is alone and they encounter a new word they will likely sound out the word. As great as this technique is, it is only as powerful as your child’s exposure to letter-sound combinations. While the ingredients on the label aren’t going to be used by your child in the classroom, the letter-sound combinations that it exposes them to make it easier for them to learn new words when they are alone.
