Mastering mathematics is essential for your child's future opportunities in school and career. He or she will need to reach a certain level of competency in math to pass advanced high-school courses, be admitted to college, and to have a wider variety of career choices. We at The Tutoring Center here in Sandestin, Florida would like to give you some advice on how to help your child maximize their math comprehension.

Concepts

Make sure your child understands basic mathematical concepts. Otherwise, math becomes meaningless memorization and rote drills. Have your child manipulate objects to figure out basic concepts. Stacking different colored Legos is a good exercise in addition and subtraction. How many Legos is in this stack? How many will there be if you take out just the blue ones?

Neat Numbers

Out of all the errors in solving math problems, 25% of them are due to sloppy number writing. Improve your child's number writing skills by having her trace over numbers that you have written. Supply her with graph paper to keep the numbers in problems neatly aligned.

Mental Math

Teach your child how to do math "in her head." One of the major ways to solve problems is by using mental math. Kids should use this method more often than using pencil and paper or a calculator. When helping your child with a problem, help her determine when it would be appropriate to use mental math.

Math for Life

Make mathematics part of your child's daily life. It will become more meaningful when she sees how important it is in so many real-life situations. Encourage her to use math in practical ways. For example, ask her to space new plants a certain distance apart, double a recipe, and pay bills in stores.
