It's very common to put off a chore or assignment we don’t want to do, but what happens when we do it constantly? We become procrastinators. As a parent, you’re probably used to this frustrating behavior in your children and you might feel helpless and lost dealing with it. Don't worry, you’re not alone. This post from The Tutoring Center, Sandestin FL brings you useful information to help your young procrastinator.

Understanding the Reason It Happens

In order to be able to fix a problem you have to understand why it happens. Contrary to popular belief, procrastinating doesn’t happen just because a person is lazy or unmotivated.  There are many other possible reasons: they may not see the relevance of the task, they might find it boring, they might have problems managing time, or they might even feel anxious or afraid of doing it wrong. Talk to them to try to find the root of the problem so you can look for a solution

5 Steps to Try

  1. Ask your child questions: try to ask questions to understand how they view themselves and how they interpret the current situation they are in.
  2. Simplify your expectations: talk to your child about your expectations clearly and realistically. For instance, tell them you’re more concerned about the effort they make than the end result. The key to ending procrastination is to set reasonable expectations.
  3. Develop problem solving skills: teach your child effective ways to solve their problems and create a plan to reach their goals.
  4. Mention their positive qualities: help your child's self-esteem by pointing out some of their best qualities.
  5. Talk about your experience: show your child that you have had the same problems and you overcame them. By teaching them that everyone struggles, they can feel more capable of managing the unwanted task.
