As senior year gets closer for many high school students, the stress over college applications starts to set in. Knowing what colleges you want to apply to and what their requirements are give you a good idea of where to start. It’s easy to get caught up in over analyzing every detail of the application process, but take a deep breath and take a step back. The Tutoring Center in Sandestin has some helpful suggestions to help you keep your cool as you go through the college application process.

Select your top choices

Don’t get stressed out listening to everyone’s opinions about where you should be applying. You are the one who is going to be attending school, so research schools that interest you and that have degree programs that meet what you want. Talk to your guidance counselor about your options and ask if you can be introduced to people who attend the schools you’re considering. Talking to actual students can help you get a better feel for the school. Remember that you’re planning your future and your opinion is the most important.

What’s done is done

Thinking in what-ifs won’t help you at all when applying to college. Don’t wonder about what may have been if your grades were a little higher or if you had joined a few more clubs on campus. This type of thinking will only cause more stress over things that can’t be changed. Focus on things that can still make a difference. If you aren’t satisfied with your SAT scores, schedule a retake. Focus on the upcoming school year, and make sure you do your best to get involved and maintain a great GPA.

Fulfilling application requirements

As you begin to apply to schools, remember to check all the requirements that come with applying. Make a checklist for each school to make sure you turn in all the necessary documentation. Fill out the common application and have someone review it to make sure it’s complete. Write your admissions essays and have your teachers review them. They can give you great advice to help make sure your essays are concise and attention grabbing. If you have to mail documentation through the post office, keep receipts and tracking numbers in order. If something gets lost in the mail or doesn’t make it, having the mailing information ready will help you and the admissions offices work together to resolve the issue.
